The thing about people watering their succulents wrong

I see it all the time at the nursery. Someone picks up a succulent and says they killed the last one by under-watering. 9 times out of 10, they drowned it. Succulents rot if their soil stays wet for more than 3 days. I keep mine in a gritty mix with perlite and only water when the leaves get a little wrinkly. That took me 6 months and 4 dead echeverias to figure out. Has anyone else found that people blame the wrong cause for plant deaths?

Oh man, you nailed it. People always blame underwatering but it's almost always root rot from keeping the soil too wet. I've seen so many folks use regular potting soil and water on a schedule, that's basically a death sentence for succulents. I switched to a mix with pumice instead of perlite since it doesn't float to the top, and now I just watch for the bottom leaves getting soft before I water. Took me a solid year and maybe 10 dead plants to figure out that less water plus better drainage is the only way to go.

Four of my echeverias went the same way before I figured it out. It's frustrating watching people make that same mistake and think they just didn't water enough.

Is it really that big of a deal though, succulents are tough plants.
