Check the needle first, that sickening crack is usually just it breaking.

That sound isn't always the frame itself. I've worked with an old pine frame for years, and the wood groans before it gives. A loud crack is more often something else snapping under the new tension. Your fabric wouldn't make that noise, so my first guess would be the needle. I'd bet it was the needle that broke. You should check that before you assume the worst about your frame. A broken needle is a simple fix, but a split frame is much more costly to deal with.

Ever had a sound scare you so bad you jumped out of your seat? I was fixing an old chair once, and when I leaned on it, there was this loud crack that made my heart stop. I was sure I'd split the wood, but it was just a dry joint popping back into place. Sounds in these situations are so dramatic they make you think the worst instantly. It's like your brain goes straight to the most expensive repair possible. That's probably why everyone jumps to frame damage before checking the needle.
