A client told me their 200-year-old family bible fell apart because it was stored in a damp attic in Savannah.

It made me realize I need to give more specific storage advice, so what's the one thing you always tell clients about preserving their books?

Honestly, telling people to avoid attics and basements is step one. Those places are basically book murder rooms. Keep them somewhere you'd actually want to sit yourself.

My grandma stored her entire Agatha Christie collection in a damp basement corner. Twenty years later they smelled like wet dog and fell apart if you opened them. It's like we treat books like old holiday decorations instead of things we actually like. If you wouldn't sit on that concrete floor to read, your book shouldn't have to live there either. The best shelf space is right next to your favorite chair, where you can actually grab one.

Two hundred years just to die in an attic, that's heartbreaking!
