Why does nobody talk about how book clubs skip the actual debate part?

I've been in three different book clubs over the last 5 years and every single one turns into a 45 minute chat about the author's personal life or what we ate that week. Last month we read "Where the Crawdads Sing" and the whole meeting was 38 minutes of people talking about their childhood vacations near marshes. Nobody brought up the actual court case structure or whether the ending was fair. I called it out once and got three blank stares. Has anyone else dealt with groups that just refuse to tackle the real arguments in a book?
