Our group's whole voting system fell apart last night over 'The Three-Body Problem'

We use a simple show of hands to pick books, but last night three people wanted to discuss the Chinese cultural parts, two just wanted to talk about the science, and one person said they hated the whole thing. It turned into a 45 minute argument about what a book club is even for. How do other clubs handle it when a book splits the group that badly?
