Why does nobody mention that a 2 inch pipe takes 4x the weld passes of a 1 inch?
Was flipping through an old ASME code book at my shop in Gary and saw a table that said a 2 inch schedule 40 joint needs about 4 times the fill passes of a 1 inch. Spent 3 hours on one coupon after work just to see if it was real and yeah, it checks out. Now half the guys on my crew say we should just bid by pipe size and the other half say that's nuts because wall thickness and position change everything. Where do you all land on this, is sizing the job off diameter alone a shortcut or a trap?
