Took me 6 hours to fix a steam trap that should've been 20 minutes
Went to a job in Gary last month where the steam trap was blowing through and wasting condensate. I checked the obvious stuff, the float, the seat, even swapped the thermostatic element first. Turned out the inlet strainer was packed with scale so fine it looked like mud, and it took me another 4 hours to flush the whole line because nobody had put a blowdown valve in. My foreman finally walked over and said 'you're overthinking it, Eric,' but the real fix was just cutting in a new tee with a valve. Has anyone else dealt with a system where the previous guy skipped the simple maintenance access points? I'd rather spend an extra day on that than guess through a hidden blockage.

I read a maintenance blog last week that said half of all steam system failures trace back to missing blowdown valves, not the traps themselves. That matches what you found, the scale buildup was the real issue and a two dollar valve would have saved you four hours. Getting access points added should be standard practice on any install, nobody should have to learn that lesson the hard way.

Did you ever stop to think about how much time you waste just because of how someone else set things up? I used to be the guy who figured you just work around whatever is there, you know, make do with the poor layout and get it done. Then I hit a similar thing with a dirty sensor line, spent three hours chasing readings that made no sense, and finally realized the old crew never put in a shutoff valve, so I couldn't isolate anything. That changed my whole view, now I always check for basic access points first, because a little extra work up front beats guessing and digging through a mess. You're totally right about pushing for that tee and valve, it's the kind of thing that saves everyone headaches later.
