Rant: I thought preheating tube sheet holes was a waste of time, then a guy named Duane at the Local 13 hall in Detroit proved me wrong | Boilermakers - Chatter Central
Man I had the exact same attitude when I started out and it bit me good. We were doing a bundle of heat exchangers and I skipped the preheat on the tube sheet holes cause I figured it was just something old timers said to hear themselves talk. Wound up with cracks all over the place and had to cut the whole thing apart and start over, which cost us two days we did not have. Old boy on my crew sat me down and explained how the thick metal sucks the heat right out of your weld before it can fuse right, and once I started preheating like I was supposed to the difference was night and day. Duane sounds like one of those guys who has forgot more than most of us will ever know, so listen to him while you got him around.
