Old timer in St. Louis told me to always pre-heat a flange with a rosebud before the final weld.

Said it would stop warping on the big steam lines. Tried it on a 12-inch job last month and the fit-up was perfect. Anyone else use this trick on pressure piping?

My buddy's foreman swore by that. They did it on a big refinery turnaround, said the flanges sat flat as a pancake. Old school tricks still work sometimes.

Ha, no kidding. I saw a crew do that on some big steam line flanges last year. They were fighting a weep for days. Slapped that trick on there, torqued it down, and it sealed up first try. Sometimes the old guys just know things you won't find in a manual.

Trying to explain that kind of thing to a new guy is always funny. You sound like a crazy person describing some backyard fix until they see it work. Then they just stand there staring at the pipe like you did magic. Makes you wonder what other simple fixes we've completely forgotten about, right? The fancy new way isn't always the right way.
