My favorite stinger lead finally gave out on a job in Gary

I've been using the same 50 foot extension cord for years, the one with the orange casing that I always trusted. Last Tuesday it shorted out right when I was powering up a 220 volt welder on a tank repair in Gary. The breaker tripped and I lost half an afternoon waiting on a replacement from the shop truck. That old cord had frayed near the plug end and I kept ignoring it because it still worked. Now I'm checking every cord I own for cracks and asking the guys on my crew, how often do you replace your leads before they fail on you?

Ever read that cords should be swapped every 2-3 years?
