Hot take: I chose stick welding over MIG for shop work and got roasted for it
Everyone in my local boilermaker hall in Gary keeps telling me MIG is faster and cleaner for shop fabrication, but I went with stick for my last pressure vessel job because I wanted deeper penetration on the root pass. It took me 4 extra hours on a 60-foot seam, but that X-ray came back perfect with zero porosity. Any other guys still pushing stick over wire feed for certain jobs?

Stick has its place for root passes, that xray proves it.

Sounds like you spent 4 extra hours to prove a point... was it really worth it?" I mean, you passed the xray, but that's a lot of overtime for a root pass that MIG could've done with some preheat and technique.
