Question about the shift in our local game night crowd over the past two years

Our weekly meetup at the Cedar Rapids library used to be about ten of us, all deep into heavy strategy stuff like Twilight Imperium. We'd set up one big game and play for hours. About two years ago, that changed. Now we get twenty plus people, but half the tables are playing party games like Codenames or Just One. The vibe is totally different, more about quick laughs than long plans. I think it's because the library started advertising the event as 'board games for everyone' on their community calendar. It brought in a whole new crowd, which is cool, but I miss the hardcore sessions. Has anyone else seen their group split like this, and how do you handle it?

But what if the new crowd is actually a good thing? Those party games can be a gateway... some of those people might get curious about the heavier stuff after a few weeks. Maybe you could run a short learn to play night for a simpler strategy game once a month to bridge the gap.

Gateway theory sounds nice but will they actually stick around for the heavy stuff?

Honestly that split is just how it goes now. Tbh the library advertising worked too well and changed the whole point of the night. You gotta make a separate event for the heavy games if you want that vibe back. Trying to mix those two crowds in one room never really works out. The new people are there for a social hour, not a four hour space opera.
