Had a weird chat with my sister's new boyfriend last weekend that stuck with me
He saw my game shelf and said, 'Oh, you're one of those people who buys games just to own them.' He wasn't being mean, just blunt. I told him I play them, and he said, 'Sure, but you own like 60. You play each one maybe twice a year. It's a collection hobby, not a playing hobby.' It kind of hit different because he's not a geek at all. Made me actually look at my shelf. I've got 12 games still in shrink wrap. Is he right? When does having games cross over from playing to just... collecting stuff? Anyone else had a moment like that?

So your sister's boyfriend looked at your shelf and decided to diagnose your entire hobby? What's next, he sees your fridge and says you're into 'food collecting' because you haven't eaten the pickles yet? My shelf has games I haven't opened too, but that's just future me's problem. Sounds like he's just mad his only game is probably something boring like a spreadsheet simulator.

My brother-in-law used to make comments about my board games gathering dust. I just started asking him to explain his own hobbies in painful detail. Turns out his fantasy football league is basically a spreadsheet simulator with extra steps. People who judge collections usually have something they're insecure about themselves. Now he leaves my shelves alone.

My buddy's coworker said the same thing about his comic books.
