Saw a tip about using a sock over your camera lens to fix glare in bright sunlight

I was at my son's soccer game last Saturday and the sun was so bad I couldn't see anything on my phone screen. A lady next to me said she stretches a thin white sock over her lens to cut the harsh light. I tried it on a few shots and the difference was huge. No more washed out faces. Has anyone else tried something like this for outdoor shooting?

Honestly that sock trick is genius. White fabric diffuses the light way better than messing with settings. I'm definitely stealing that for my next outdoor shoot.
