My old post vise snapped its main screw clean off yesterday afternoon.

I was trying to hold a stubborn piece of 1/2 inch square stock for some twisting, and it just gave way with a loud crack. I'm looking at a replacement screw, but I'm wondering if anyone has had luck welding a new one on versus finding a whole new vise body.

Honestly it feels like everything's just built to break these days, even the old stuff. I'd try welding a new screw on first, since finding a whole vise body is probably a pain. Good luck with the fix, that's a real bummer.

Ever try to weld something and just make it worse? I mean, I once tried to fix a lawn chair and ended up with a metal blob that looked like modern art. Maybe it's just me, but heat and old metal can be a real gamble.

Ryan369 has a point about things being built to break, but that old vise screw took a lot of force over the years. Welding a new one on sounds good in theory, but I'd worry about the heat messing up the temper of that old cast iron body. Have you checked the threads inside the vise nut itself? If those are stripped, a new screw won't hold for long.
