My friend told me to skip the first season of a show and I'm so glad I did

My buddy Mark has been telling me for months to watch 'The Expanse'. I tried the first episode twice and just couldn't get into it (the pacing felt so slow). He finally said, 'Just start with season two, I promise it makes sense.' I was sure this was bad advice, but after another failed attempt, I gave in. I started with season two, and wow, he was right. The story just grabbed me right away, and the show filled in the needed backstory without making me sit through the slower build. I binged the whole thing in about two weeks. Now I'm wondering, has anyone else had a show where skipping ahead actually made it better?

What shows actually get worse if you skip the early slow part? Like with The Wire, if you skip season one you miss how the whole game works, so later seasons wouldn't hit as hard.

My sister had to basically trick me into watching Parks and Rec. I got so bored with the first season, it felt like a bad Office copy. She told me to just jump in when Ben and Chris show up, and it was like a whole different show. I went back later and watched the early stuff, but I would have quit forever if I hadn't skipped ahead.

Skipping the first season is a huge mistake, cora863. Those early episodes are the foundation that makes the later character growth so good. You miss the whole awkward setup of Leslie's world and why she needed people like Ben and Chris to shake things up. It's a slow burn, but watching the show evolve naturally is way more satisfying than jumping to the "good parts." The rough start is part of the charm and makes the payoff better.
