Why I stopped using disc brake cleaner after 10 years

I always thought degreaser and a rag were good enough for cleaning disc brakes, but last month I had a customer come back with squealing brakes two days after a service. A buddy at the shop showed me how the residue from regular degreaser soaks into the pads and causes noise, so I finally tried the proper stuff and it fixed the problem instantly. Has anyone else found a workaround that avoids buying the expensive cleaner every time?

Oh man, here's something I don't see anyone talking about... the old degreasers used to have this gritty texture that actually helped scrub off the baked-on grease without scratching metal. The new stuff is all thin and liquidy, so you end up using twice as much just to get the same coverage on a grill top. Plus that old gritty kind would cling to vertical surfaces longer too, so you weren't fighting gravity while trying to clean the back splash.
