PSA: I had to choose between a full rebuild or just a new chain on a worn drivetrain

A customer brought in a 3 year old commuter bike with a skipping 9-speed cassette. The chain was at 0.75% wear, but the cassette looked a bit hooked. I had to decide between just a new chain and hoping it seated, or selling them a new chain and cassette together. I went with the full swap to avoid a callback. It fixed the skip, but I'm curious if anyone else would have tried the cheaper option first on a commuter bike.

Why not just try the chain first? A hooked cassette can sometimes still work fine with a fresh chain, saving the customer money. You might have done extra work for no real reason.

Ever tried just the chain and it still skipped?

Wait, you'd let a hooked cassette slide?
