That neighbor lady was right about my laundry routine

She straight up told me I was wasting money washing everything on hot. I argued with her for like 10 minutes about germs and stains. Then I tried her method, cold water for almost everything except underwear and towels. After 3 months my electric bill dropped about $25 a month and my clothes actually look less faded. Anyone else get handed a tip from a stranger that ended up being smarter than what you were doing?

Hold up, $25 a month? That's a whole streaming service just from switching to cold water. You're telling me I could've been saving that much this whole time?

My electric bill went up $12 last month and I nearly lost my mind. I've tried the cold water thing before and my clothes came out feeling stiff and smelling like damp basement. My gas heater is from 2006 so maybe the math is different for me, but I'd rather keep my $25 and have shirts that don't feel like sandpaper. Plus hot water actually kills the bacteria that makes gym clothes smell like death warmed over.

@jade_johnson So you're telling me that $300 a year just from washing clothes? What kind of water heater do you have, and how big is your household? I've got an electric one from the 90s that eats power like crazy, so I'm curious if that math changes if you're on gas vs electric.
