Bought a fancy smoker thermometer and my cheap one was more accurate

I dropped $80 on a Bluetooth thermometer last month because I thought my old $15 probe was junk. Set it up for a pork shoulder, left the house to run errands, and came back to a cold smoker. The new one lost connection halfway through, and I ended up pulling the meat way early and it was tough. Has anyone else had a fancy gadget fail on them during a long cook?

Wait you're telling me the expensive Bluetooth ones can just drop out like that? I used to be all about the fancy tech too until I had my wireless probe shut off halfway through a brisket and I had to finish it blind. Now I just stick with the old wired one and it's never let me down.

Oh jeez, that reminds me of the time my old wired thermometer got chewed through by my dog right before a big cookout. I had to go off feel alone and it turned out okay but now I always keep a backup probe in the drawer just in case.

Oh man, @victor_jones99 hit it right on the head. A buddy of mine bought one of those wifi-enabled probes last summer and it dropped the signal right as his brisket was about to hit the stall, he had to guess the rest of the way and ended up with shoe leather. I swear these fancy gadgets just add more things that can go wrong when all you really need is a simple wire that actually works.
