Warning: $90 on an Amazon cheap air filter ruined my HVAC unit in 6 months
The discount 4-pack filters let way too much dust through. Had a tech out yesterday who showed me the buildup on the coils. Quoted me $1200 to clean. Has anyone else had a cheap filter cost them big?

Wait, is that what happened to my unit last summer? I thought I was just cursed with bad luck, but now I'm wondering if my 4-pack from some random brand did me in too. I had a similar issue where the AC just stopped keeping up, and the repair guy pulled out a filter that looked like it was from a 90s dust bunny convention - all fluffy but not catching anything real. I'm pretty sure I spent more on the energy bill from the unit working overtime than the filter savings were worth. Lesson learned, I guess my cheap filter experiment was just a pricey science project in disguise.

Doesn't it feel like every 'smart' choice ends up costing you more in the long run? I used to grab the cheapest filters too, but after seeing my last one turn into a solid block of dust, I'm right there with you on learning the expensive way.
