Vent: That 'vintage' lamp shade took me 4 weekends to identify
Found this cool looking lamp at a Goodwill in Portland for $8, but the shade was unmarked. Thought it was just some old thing, turns out it was a mid-century piece missing its original fitting. I spent four Saturdays chasing forums and antique shops, finally a dealer in Sellwood told me it was a replacement from the 80s. The shade still works fine but I could have bought a proper one for the same money after all that digging. Anyone else ever burn way more time than the deal was worth?
Checked the shade against known maker catalogs before you bought it would have saved you those weekends. Mid-century shades usually have tiny marks on the inner rim or spider fitting, even replacements from the 80s often have a sticker or stamp somewhere. Next time snap pics and post to r/Mid_Century or the Antique Lamp Collectors group on Facebook, those folks ID stuff in hours for free. Also hit up the library for old Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogs, they're gold for dating shades by shape alone.
