My client in Cincinnati wanted a skin fade but his hair was too patchy from an old scar.

I had to choose between doing a zero guard and exposing the scar or using a #1 to blend over it, and I went with the #1. He was way happier with the fuller look, but I'm curious how you all handle tricky spots like that?

Honestly, I'd have gone with the zero guard every time. Exposing the scar shows you're not trying to hide a bad job, and it often looks cleaner than forcing hair over a bald spot. A lot of guys appreciate the honesty of a crisp zero fade, even if it means showing some skin. That patchy blend from a #1 can look messy up close and grow out weird.

Man, I used to be all about trying to cover stuff up. Figured a number one guard was the safe play to hide any thin spots or scars. But you're totally right. I saw a buddy last week who got a zero fade with a pretty noticeable scar on his sideburn area, and it just looked intentional and sharp. Trying to blend over it with a one does look kinda messy after a few days, like you're trying too hard. It grows out all uneven. The zero just owns it and stays clean way longer.

Totally agree, it's like the scar becomes part of the style instead of a problem you're fighting. That clean zero line just looks sharp and planned, while a one guard gets fuzzy and highlights the patchiness. A good barber will even use the scar as a guide for a super crisp fade. Trying to hide it always ends up looking worse once it starts growing out uneven.
