Changed my mind about clipper oil after visiting a shop in Austin
Saw a barber there spraying blades with a thin lubricant instead of oil and asked why he said oil gunks up the motor over time so I tried his method on my clippers and they run smoother after a month has anyone else ditched regular clipper oil for something lighter?

That's exactly what I started doing about two years ago after my old Wahl clippers started bogging down. I was cleaning them all the time and the motor still sounded rough. A buddy of mine who restores vintage tools told me to try using a lightweight machine oil instead of that thick clipper oil. I bought a little bottle of sewing machine oil at the hardware store for three bucks and it's been night and day. My clippers run cooler and I don't have that gummy residue building up around the blade hinge anymore. I still clean the blades after each use but I barely need to oil them anymore because the thin stuff stays put better. I'll never go back to that sticky clipper oil.

Right after reading this I went and found a bottle of sewing machine oil at the bottom of my junk drawer and now I feel like I've been doing haircuts wrong my whole life. Might have more luck with my hair clippers than I do with my own hairline at this point.

Wait, hold on. The guy uses sewing machine oil on clippers and gets BETTER results? That completely blows my mind because I always thought that stuff was way too thin for anything mechanical like clippers. I've got three different bottles of that thick gummy clipper oil sitting in my bathroom cabinet and I just assumed it was the only option. Now I'm sitting here looking at my wife's sewing kit like a complete idiot. I might have to sneak a drop out of that bottle and see what happens to my Wahl clippers tonight.
