Three years of baking and I just realized my oven runs 25 degrees hot
So I've been baking at my place in Cleveland for about 3 years now. Cookies always came out a little too brown on the bottom, cakes took longer than the recipe said, and I just figured I was bad at reading directions. Last week my neighbor brought over one of those cheap oven thermometers and we stuck it on the middle rack. Set the oven to 350 and it actually hit 375. Twenty five degrees off this whole time. I redid my go-to chocolate chip recipe at 325 and they came out perfect for the first time ever. Made me wonder how many batches I basically ruined without knowing it. Has anyone else found a simple fix like this that made you question everything you thought you knew about your setup?
Wait, three years of baking with the same oven and you never noticed your cookies were basically frying on the bottom? That's wild to me because I would've blamed the recipe or my own hands way before ever checking the actual heat. I guess we all trust the dial too much, but man, that's a whole lot of wasted chocolate chips.
