Just pulled my first ripe tomato of the season

I've been babying this tomato plant since spring. Seeing that red fruit finally ready made all the watering worth it. Do you guys have tips for keeping tomatoes from splitting?

Babying one plant for a single tomato seems like overkill.

Reminds me of my neighbor who built a tiny greenhouse just for one pepper plant, @mark_hayes.

Splitting is so frustrating. It usually comes from uneven watering. The plant drinks up water too fast after a dry spell and the skin can't stretch. A thick layer of mulch helps keep the soil damp. Do you find it happens more after a heavy rain or after you water it yourself?
