Question about the new self-checkout at the grocery store on Maple Avenue

I was there yesterday and the machine's voice was set way too loud, announcing 'please place your item in the bagging area' for everyone to hear after I scanned a box of condoms. Anyone else had a mortifying moment with those new machines?

That mute button thing alex307 mentioned never seems to work for me either. Honestly, the loud voice is the least of it. My machine the other day flagged a "unexpected item" because my reusable bag was too light, then a manager had to come over while I was buying a single cucumber and a tub of sour cream. The whole system just makes simple shopping feel like you're being watched and doing something wrong.
