Just realized my friend was right about my terrible joke timing

At a party last Friday, I told a really long, complicated joke to a group of people. My friend Sam pulled me aside later and said, 'Dude, you started that story when the music stopped. Everyone was just standing there in silence for two whole minutes.' I felt my face get hot. Now, I keep my stories short at parties and watch the room's vibe first. Has anyone else gotten called out for bad social timing?

Two whole minutes of silence is a special kind of torture.

Right? It's like your own brain turns on you and starts yelling about every dumb thing you've ever done. That's the real torture, not the quiet itself. Feels like a lifetime when you're just standing there trying not to make eye contact. They should use it to get info out of spies, honestly.

Started counting ceiling tiles in my head, actually worked pretty well for me. I’d pick a pattern and just start multiplying, like 12 rows by 8 columns equals 96, and then I'd double check myself. @carr.elliot is right though, even with that trick those two minutes feel like an hour.
