I tried to give a compliment to my neighbor and it went so wrong
Honestly, I saw my neighbor at the grocery store and said I really liked her new haircut. She just stared at me and said, 'Sam, I've had this haircut for over a year.' I was so sure it was new. We just stood there by the frozen peas for what felt like forever. Has anyone else put their foot in their mouth this bad trying to be nice?

Yikes, that's a classic case of our brains filing people under "last seen." We don't really look at people we see all the time, we just recognize the general shape. So you were complimenting a mental picture from 2019.

Yeah the "last seen" thing from @wesley385 makes total sense... I always figured we just got used to how people look.

Man that happens to me all the time, not just with haircuts. I realized I stopped really seeing my own family after a while, just the idea of them. It's like our brains are lazy and save a low-res picture to save space. Makes you wonder what else we're missing because we're on autopilot.
