I accidentally called my new neighbor by my ex's name during a housewarming party

I was handing them a drink in their kitchen in Denver last weekend and it just slipped out. The room went quiet for a second before I mumbled an apology and hid by the snack table. Has anyone else ever mixed up names that badly in front of a group?

Grab a six pack and knock on their door this week. Just say your brain short circuited and you're sorry, then change the subject to something about the neighborhood. Makes it a tiny thing instead of a big deal.

Oof, that "room went quiet" feeling is the worst. Been there. My advice is to own it directly with the neighbor soon, one on one. A quick, honest apology like, "Hey, again, really sorry about the name mix-up at the party, that was my bad," clears the air way better than hoping it fades. In my experience, most people are pretty understanding about a simple brain glitch. Trying to pretend it never happened just makes it more awkward later.

That "room went quiet" moment is the real killer. The trick is to make your next chat with them so normal that the awkward memory gets replaced. Just talk about trash day or a good local pizza place right after you apologize.
