Pro tip: A mechanic in Phoenix told me to always check the static wicks before the transponder, and it saved a job last week.

I was on a routine check for a Citation CJ2 and had a weird intermittent transponder failure code. I was about to dive into the avionics bay when an older A&P, who was working on the engine across the hangar, walked over. He pointed at the wingtip and said, 'Kid, I've seen that code three times this year, and twice it was a broken static wick causing a stray discharge.' Sure enough, two of the four wicks were snapped clean off. Replaced them, and the code cleared right up. Has anyone else had a weird fault turn out to be something simple like that?

Oh man, that is such a classic. It's wild how a tiny thing like a static wick can make a whole system act up. I swear, half the weird gremlins I chase end up being something totally simple and physical like that. You just get so focused on the black boxes you forget to check the basics first. That old mechanic saved you a ton of time.

Totally, chasing those gremlins always makes me miss the simple stuff too (like that one time with a loose ground strap).

Absolutely! Those old timers have seen it all. @hayden_nelson85 is right about the loose ground strap too, same kind of deal. I spent a whole afternoon once on a wonky fuel gauge that turned out to be a pinched wire under the seat rail. Another time a rough-running engine was just a cracked primer line letting in air. You get so deep into the manuals you forget to just walk around the plane and look at it.
