Unpopular opinion: I used to think buying a used scan tool was a bad idea, now I get it

For years I swore by buying new scan tools only. Figured used ones were either outdated or about to die. Then last month I picked up a used Autel MaxiSys Mini from a guy in Des Moines for $400 instead of $900 new. It's been three weeks and it works perfect for everything I need on these 2010s Hondas and Toyotas. What convinced me was watching a YouTube video where a mechanic showed his used Autel had the same software updates as new. Has anyone else had good luck with buying used diag equipment? I'm thinking about trying it for a used oscilloscope next.

Man, that's a solid deal for $400... I've been curious about used high-end stuff myself but always worry about getting stuck with a brick if the previous owner didn't transfer the license properly. Did the guy you bought it from walk you through de-registering it on his account, or did you just trust him and hope for the best?

Yeah, I've been down that road too. I was sweating bullets buying a used interface last year, but the guy I bought it from was cool about it. He logged into his account right there on his phone and showed me the de-registration confirmation email before I even handed over the cash. I wouldn't just trust someone and hope for the best unless they could prove they owned it legit with a receipt or something. Better to walk away than end up with a $400 paperweight, you know?
