Saw a master tech diagnose a no-start in 4 minutes flat yesterday

He just listened to the crank speed with his scope for 10 seconds and called it a bad compression ring on cylinder 3, and I realized I've been wasting hours throwing parts at electrical gremlins when I should be paying more attention to the basics.

Makes you wonder how many hours we've burned on guessing games.

Hear that crank speed change and you know something mechanical is off long before you start chasing wires. That old school approach is gold and I've seen it save days of work more than once. Most people don't realize how much info a scope can give you about mechanical condition without even touching a sensor. Your mileage may vary but if you train your ear to the crank consistency you catch bad rings, weak valves, even timing chain issues just from the sound. Compression tests and leakdown tests will always have their place but that first quick listen can point you straight at the mechanical side instead of the electrical side. It's a humbling reminder that the basics are often where the real answers live.

Wait, he called a bad compression ring just from the crank speed variance?

That first crank speed wobble is way more telling than I used to give it credit for. I always thought it was just guessing, but now I see how it actually directs your troubleshooting.
