Bought a cheap OBD2 scanner from a truck stop near Flagstaff and it bricked my ECU

It was a 'ScanPro' unit for about $40, and after I plugged it into a 2017 F-150, the truck wouldn't start. Had to get a new ECU programmed, which cost me over $800 and half a day of shop time. Anyone else get burned by a bargain tool that caused way more problems?

That ScanPro unit works fine on my old Silverado.

Notice how the simplest tools often outlast the fancy new stuff. My dad's old socket set from the 80s still works when my new digital torque wrench acts up. Makes you wonder why we keep buying the next big thing when the old reliable thing is right there. Guess we just like shiny boxes.

My grandfather's cast iron skillet from the 1950s is still my main pan. Nothing sticks to it and the handle never gets loose. I bought a non-stick set with all the bells and whistles a few years back, and the coating is already peeling. It really does feel like we're paying more for things that break faster. Your dad's socket set story hits home. Sometimes the best tech is just a solid piece of metal made well.
