Stopped by a collision shop in Phoenix last week and nearly walked out
I swung into a random body shop on 7th Avenue to grab a quote for a minor fender repair, and the guy at the counter straight up told me he'd been painting cars with the same compressor for 20 years without changing the oil once. I mean, the thing had to be coughing rust particles into every panel he sprayed, right? Is it just me, or does anyone else walk into shops like that and immediately want to turn around?

Wait, twenty years without an oil change? That's insane lmao. That compressor has to be shot, and yeah, he's basically sandblasting your fender with old rust and crap. You did the right thing walking out, I would've too. Some guys just treat their tools like trash and then wonder why their paint jobs look like garbage.

Oh wow, @oscar743, I gotta say I see it a little differently though... I mean yeah twenty years without an oil change is bad, but I've seen guys run old compressors way past their prime and still get decent results if they drain the tank regularly and keep the filters clean. The real issue to me is more about moisture and rust in the lines than anything else, but a lot of that can be fixed with a good dryer setup. Not saying the guy was right to neglect it that long, just that sometimes old equipment can surprise you if you know how to work around its quirks...
