My aunt told me to put a wooden spoon over a boiling pot and I thought she was nuts

She swore it would stop pasta water from boiling over, which happens to me like every other time I make spaghetti. I finally tried it last Tuesday when I was making dinner for my kids, and honestly, I was ready for a mess. I just laid a regular wooden spoon from my drawer across the top of the pot. The water got all foamy and bubbly right up to the spoon, but it never actually spilled over the edge. It just... stopped. I guess the wood breaks the surface tension of the bubbles or something? It saved me from having to clean my stovetop, that's for sure. Has anyone else tried this trick, or do you have a different method for keeping pots under control?

That wooden spoon trick is one of those old kitchen hacks that actually works.

My grandma taught me that trick years ago. It works with any wooden utensil, even a chopstick. I keep an old spoon just for that purpose because it gets a little warped. Another thing that helps is turning down the heat once you get a rolling boil.

Yeah, turning down the heat after the boil is key. I used to have pots boil over constantly until I started doing that. Now I let it roll for a minute then drop it to a simmer. What do you usually make that needs a rolling boil?
