A walk through the new park in Portland showed me how many trees were planted way too deep.

I counted at least fifteen young maples with their root flares completely buried, which is a huge problem for their long term health.

Did you report it to the parks department?

Yeah, the parks department thing. My buddy actually called them last month about a broken bench in the riverwalk park. He said it took three calls just to get a real person, and then they told him it was "on the list." That was over six weeks ago and the bench is still snapped in half. It feels like they have a list that goes straight into the trash. What's the point of reporting if nothing gets fixed?

My old neighborhood had a whole row of lindens die from being planted too deep. I used to think it was just bad luck, but now I see it's a real pattern.
