Tried using a hairdryer to speed up fridge defrosting, blew a fuse instead
I had a freezer with a thick layer of ice, so I grabbed my wife's hairdryer and stuck it in there on high heat for 5 minutes. The whole kitchen went dark and the hairdryer started smoking when I yanked it out. How many of you have learned this lesson the hard way too?

Wait, you left a hairdryer running inside a freezer for five whole minutes? That's basically asking for a short circuit, water and electronics don't mix at all. I've heard of people using a pot of hot water to speed things up but a hairdryer just seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Man I tried the hot water thing once and it just made a mess inside my freezer, water got everywhere and made the ice taste weird. What actually worked for me was just turning the freezer off completely for like 12 hours with the door propped open and a big fan pointed right into it. Set a towel underneath to catch any water dripping. That fan moved so much air through there the ice was gone way faster than I expected and no risk of electrocuting yourself or breaking anything. Plus you don't have to babysit it like you would with a hairdryer or boiling water. Just let the fan do the heavy lifting while you go do something else.

Haha @sean782, totally agree the fan method is way less risky than water tricks.
