PSA: That washer drum repair I did last month almost went sideways
Pulled a washing machine apart in a basement on Maple Street last Tuesday. Customer said it was just a squeaky bearing, but after 3 years in this trade I should have known better. The drum seal had a hairline crack I almost missed because of poor lighting down there. Anyone else run into hidden damage like this on what seems like a simple job?

uma_martinez is right about that finger test. I do the same thing now, run my finger along the seal even if I think it looks fine. Sometimes you can feel a tiny bump or rough spot before you can see it. The lighting in those basements is always terrible, no matter how many lamps I bring. I started carrying a small reading light that clips to my shirt, it helps me catch those hairline cracks that would otherwise be invisible.

The headlamp I had was basically a dying firefly in a coal mine. Found the crack by literally running my finger around the seal and feeling it.

Had the exact same thing happen with mine, running my thumb along the seal caught a tiny split I never would have seen otherwise.
