Just realized my old multimeter was lying to me for months

I had a cheap $20 multimeter from Harbor Freight that I always kept in my truck. Last week I finally broke down and bought a Fluke 117 for $180 after a guy at the supply house kept bugging me about it. Turns out my old one was reading voltage way off by like 5 volts on a 120v line, which is probably why I misdiagnosed a dryer issue back in March and blamed the wrong part. Has anyone else caught a cheap meter giving bad readings?

Borrowed my neighbor's meter once and got a tingle I wasn't expecting.

Honestly, "tingle I wasn't expecting" is the perfect way to put it. A buddy of mine borrowed his uncle's meter to check an outlet in his garage and said he felt a weird buzz up his arm for a second. He dropped the thing and swore off touching electrical stuff for like a month after that.

Brings back that same pattern @grantf73 noticed about trusting things way too long.
