Forgetting to oil it is a classic mistake, @umar59. The seasoning just doesn't bond right to the bare metal. Was your friend trying to season it in the oven, or did they just heat it up on the stove? That can make a big difference in how it turns out. A ruined pan might still be fixable with a full strip and re-season, but it's a huge pain. What method were they even trying to use?
