My $10 French press exploded coffee all over my white kitchen ceiling

I pressed down too fast this morning after 3 weeks of perfect brews and the plunger shot up like a rocket, coating everything in a 4 foot radius, so now I'm scrubbing brown splatter off my ceiling and wondering if anyone else has had a coffee geyser moment or if I'm just uniquely gifted at ruining breakfast.

wait, so the plunger actually came all the way out of the carafe? i've had French presses for years and never seen that happen unless the mesh filter was super loose or the glass was cracked at the top. was there any warning before it let go, like weird resistance or a hissing sound, or did it just go from zero to coffee volcano instantly? because if it's the latter, i'd be suspicious of the plunger rod alignment more than your pressing speed.

Zero to coffee volcano, huh? Yeah, never thought about rod alignment before, that totally changes my take.
