My 8 year old niece asked me why the cereal box had a cartoon tiger on it

We were at the grocery store in Boise and she pointed at a box, asking if the tiger made the cereal taste better. I gave my usual spiel about brand mascots and emotional connection, and she just said 'So it's a picture friend for your breakfast?' That simple question made me question if we overcomplicate brand characters. Do you ever get a reality check from the most unexpected people?

That "picture friend for your breakfast" line is perfect. We spend millions on marketing studies and a kid just cuts right to the heart of it. Sometimes I wonder if we're all just pretending this stuff is more complex than it really is. It's a cartoon tiger on a box, not a life philosophy. Her question is a good reminder not to take the branding world so seriously.

My marketing professor called this "the five-year-old test" for ad ideas.

Oh man, my buddy's kid asked why the cereal box guy was so happy... it was kind of perfect.
