Can we talk about how I dropped $340 on a rooftop tent rack that rattled loose on the first trip?
Back in 2019 I bought one of those bolt-on bed racks for my Tacoma because it looked cheap and easy. I paid $340 for the rack plus another $80 in hardware, and after two trips on washboard roads near Moab the whole thing had shifted about an inch and rubbed the paint down to bare metal. Turns out the clamps were made for a different bed size and I never checked the torque specs. I ended up pulling it off in a gas station parking lot and driving home with it strapped in the back seat. My brother runs a welded rack he got used for $200 and it has not moved a bit in 4 trips. What are you all running for bed racks, and did anybody else get burned by the bolt-on stuff?
Wait, the clamps were for a different bed size and nobody told you that when you bought it? That's the part that gets me, because how does a rack even ship without matching the bed it bolts to. I'd have been way more mad about the stripped paint than the money, since that bare metal is gonna rust if you don't touch it up.
