My balcony tomato plants brought back memories of my first garden

My balcony tomato plants just got their first red fruits this week (which was a nice surprise). It reminded me of helping my grandpa in his big garden, where we had tons of space and simple tools. Now that I'm in the city with a tiny spot, do you think small-scale gardening loses some charm?

Oh man, not at all! I grow cherry tomatoes in pots, and the charm is totally different but still there. You learn tricks, like picking types made for small spaces and using every inch by going vertical. The best part is that close care, like checking them every morning with my coffee. The charm comes from you putting in the work, not how much dirt you have.

Does your grandpa's ghost judge you for using a balcony instead of a field?

My grandpa had 80 acres in Nebraska. For years I figured his ghost would side-eye my fire escape herb pots. But seeing my neighbor nurse a pepper plant in a 5-gallon bucket on her third-floor landing changed my mind. That plant gets more daily love and notice than any single row in a big field ever could. The ghost isn't judging the dirt, he's checking if you're putting in the real work.
