The 14 year old scarf I never finished, frog it or frame it?
I dragged out a half-finished scarf from my basement last week and checked the yarn label, it had a barcode that only ran from 2010 to 2012. Doing the math, that scarf sat in a box for over 14 years while I started at least 6 other projects that also never got done. This got me thinking, is it better to rip it all out and reclaim the yarn, or keep it as a weird time capsule of who I was back then? Some part of me wants to finish it just to say I did, but the pattern is something I wouldn't pick today. The other part says giving up and starting fresh is more honest about my current taste. Anyone else ever find a UFO (unfinished object) that old, and did you frog it or finish it?
Oh man, been there so many times. I found a crochet blanket my grandma started in like 2009 and I sat on it for years trying to decide, and here is what I finally figured out: if the yarn is still good, frog it, because yarn sitting in a box for 14 years loses its bounce and gets kinda crunchy anyway, so you are not really losing much even if you love the colors. That said, if the color or the memory of starting it means something to you, cut a small square out and frame that, because you get the time capsule without the guilt of a whole project hanging over your head. Finishing it just to say you did is a trap, you will hate every stitch and then you have a scarf you never wear, which is worse than a UFO in my book. I have finished two old projects out of pure stubbornness and gave both away within a month, so now I just frog and move on. Fourteen years is long enough, let that yarn become something you actually want.
