The black wallpaper battery myth is actually half true on my S23
I used to roll my eyes at people saying dark wallpapers save battery. OLED screens are not magic. But last month I got curious and ran my own test with a free battery monitor app. 5 days with a bright colorful wallpaper, then 5 days with pure black. Same usage patterns, same apps. Black gave me about 45 extra minutes per charge. Not huge, but not nothing either. I think it depends on how much time you spend on static screens like the home screen and texting apps. I also noticed the difference shrinks a lot when I watch videos, since those are bright anyway. Anyone else ever bother measuring this or was I just wasting 10 days on a pointless experiment?
How much of that 45 minutes do you figure came from the home screen alone versus the actual apps you were in? Like were you checking the battery app's breakdown or just looking at the total? I'm curious because if you spend most of your screen time in something like Instagram or YouTube, which have their own bright themes baked in, the wallpaper barely matters. But if you're someone who keeps their phone on the home screen a lot, or uses dark mode in texting apps, then yeah I could see it adding up. Did you track screen-on time separately for each 5 day stretch too, or just trust that your usage was about the same?
