Rant: I used to think you had to sand down to bare wood for every repair.

A guy at a trade show in Atlanta last year showed me how to spot-fill with a good grain filler and blend the finish. I tried it on a 1920s oak dresser with a single deep scratch and saved about three hours of work. Anyone have a favorite filler for dark walnut?

Honestly, that 'sand to bare wood' rule feels like a conspiracy to sell more sandpaper. I wasted so many weekends following it before I learned better. Now I keep a little can of tinted wax filler for quick fixes like that.

Wait, have you seen those videos where people restore old furniture without stripping it all the way down? I watched one last week where they just cleaned it, scuffed the old finish, and used a bonding primer. The piece looked amazing and it took them an afternoon, not a month of sanding. The whole bare wood thing is way overkill for most projects. Your wax filler trick is smart for hiding small dings without starting over. I'm starting to believe the sandpaper companies are laughing all the way to the bank.

Bare wood is still best for a true restoration.
