I turned down a big project to keep a steady client, and it paid off

A new company offered me $8,000 for a website, but it would have meant dropping my regular client who pays $1,200 a month. I said no to the big job to keep the steady income, and that client just signed on for another year. Would you have taken the one-time cash or stuck with the monthly check?

But what if that big project led to even better work?

My friend Jake spent six months on a huge client pitch that fell apart at the last minute. He was crushed, but that failed pitch deck became the exact template his old boss used to land a massive contract a year later. The boss never even said thanks. Sometimes the better work isn't yours to keep, which is a tough pill to swallow. Your point is a good one, @susan_bell, but in my experience the payoff isn't always direct or fair. It can feel like you're just building blocks for someone else's win.
