Why my mold wash mix ruined a casting

I made the mold wash like always, but the metal came out rough. A veteran worker told me I put too much water in it. Today I mixed it with less water, and the surface looks better. Is there a trick to get the thickness perfect for each pour?

My uncle swears by a simple paint thickness gauge.

What kind of paint gauge does your uncle use, the kind with the little wheels? I mean, even with a number, you gotta figure out what that perfect number is for your shop, right? Maybe keeping a stupid simple logbook next to the mixer to write down the gauge reading and how that specific pour turned out would help. That way it's less about getting it perfect one time and more about seeing what works over a bunch of tries.

Getting the mix right is such a pain, it feels like one tiny change wrecks the whole batch. I've had casts come out with a gritty texture that needed so much extra cleanup. That idea from beth_sanchez47 about a paint thickness gauge is smart, it gives you a real number to aim for instead of just guessing. I try to mix a small test batch and brush it on some scrap to see how it dries before committing to a pour. Even then, some days I still don't get it perfect.
